Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban | JK Rowling (Food Reference List)
“There were shelves upon shelves of the most succulent-looking sweets imaginable. Creamy chunks of nougat, shimmering pink squares of coconut ice, fat, honey-coloured toffees; hundreds of different kinds of chocolate in neat rows; there was a large barrel of Every Flavour Beans, and another of Fizzing Whizzbees, the levitating sherbet balls that Ron had mentioned; along yet another wall were ‘Special Effects’ sweets: Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum (which filled a room with bluebell-coloured bubbles that refused to pop for days), the strange, splintery Toothflossing Stringmints, tiny black Pepper Imps (‘breathe fire for your friends!’), Ice Mice (‘hear your teeth chatter and squeak!’), peppermint creams shaped like toads (‘hop realistically in the stomach!’) , fragile sugar-spun quills and exploding bonbons.”
soup
toast
tea
fruitcake: a usually dense cake filled with spices, candied fruits and dried nuts, all soaked in a spirit (commonly rum or brandy)
wine
pie
brandy: Usually drunk as an after dinner drink, brandy is a spirit made of distilled wine.
crumpets: It looks a bit like a pancake (it’s cooked on the stove) with lots of little holes on the top, however is made with yeast.
chocolate pudding: Pudding in the UK isn’t like in the US, where it’s a diary based dessert. The pudding described here is cake based usually with a chocolate sauce.
Pepper Imps: A sweet sold at Honeydukes. They are peppermint flavoured but tiny, black in colour, and make you smoke at the ears and nose.
Chocoballs: chocolate balls full of strawberry mousse and clotted cream (what you usually put on scones with jam)
Sugar quills: Described as ‘delicate, spun-sugar sweets’ that look like real quills. Spun sugar is cotton candy.
sherbet balls: What Fizzing Whizzbees are.
chocolate
sausages
fried tomatoes: Slices of large tomatoes, pan fried, sometimes with herbs.
stew
pumpkin juice: At Universal’s Island of Adventure, pumpkin juice tastes of warm apple pie.
meat and carrot
steak and kidney pudding: Yes, pudding. The pastry is suet based, filled with chunks of steak and kidney, onions and so on, and is steamed for several hours.
butterbeer: Described as “a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch” and has a low alcohol content (although makes house elves drunk.) The butterbeer served at Universal and Warner Bros studio is very sweet. Butterbeer however has been around since the 1400’s, and is a mix of beer, butter, sugar. spices and egg. (Try my authentic Butterbeer recipe here).
fudge: A cooked sweet made from sugar, butter and milk
porridge
Toothflossing Stringmints: Minty sweets. I’m assuming they looked like dental floss.
Jelly Slugs: gummy candies that look like slugs
creamy chunks of nougat: A sweet usually made of sugar, egg whites and nuts.
shimmering pink squares of coconut ice: An icing sugar/ coconut sweet.
honey coloured toffee
chocolates
Every flavour beans: (in flavours such as toast, coconut, baked bean, strawberry, curry, grass, coffee, sardine, pepper, chocolate, peppermint, marmalade, spinach, tripe, booger, vomit and earwax)
Fizzing whizbees: Sherbet balls that make you float slightly off the ground
Droobles best blowing gum: bluebell-coloured gum in crazyberry flavour
Ice mice: They make your teeth chatter and squeak. No other information is known.
Peppermint Toads: peppermint creams that look like toads
Exploding bonbons: Sweets that blow up when eaten.
Blood flavoured lollipops: A lollipop most likely for vampires
Cockroach clusters: Sweets made of cockroaches that look like peanuts
Acid pops: A sweet that burns a hole through your tongue
gillywater: A drink served at The Three Broomsticks. I think I’ve wondered about this on another Harry Potter food list, but as Gillywater is apparently made from Gillyweed, which makes you grow gills and webbing, does this drink and make you feel something?
mulled mead: Mead is a alcoholic honey drink, and mulled mead is this warmed with spices and fruits.
cherry syrup and soda with ice and umbrella
red currant rum: Just that, rum made from red currants
dozen mince pies
nut brittle
Christmas cake
roast potatoes
Chocolate Frog
pumpkin fizz: pumpkin flavoured sherbet
Fudge Flies
Bath buns: A sweet yeasty bread roll with sugar baked in the bottom, and is sprinkled with more sugar on top after baking
apple pie
Fortescue choco-nut sundae
All the foods associated with the Harry Potter world are quite interesting. My daughter and I decided to introduce the grandkids to Harry’s world by having theme nights. Like tomorrow we are watching the Chamber of Secrets and making a meal to coincide with this chapter’s food choices in our cookbook. Of course there will be Butterbeer too! This one made with the cream soda!!
Thanks for recipes!!
