Peppermint Humbugs | Harry Potter

Served at Hogwarts during their feast, make your own peppermint humbugs like the elves must've whipped up.

Peppermint humbugs might seem out of place at a feast of Honeydukes in Harry’s eyes, but any peppermint treat would do wonders as an after dinner mint.

If you’re throwing a Harry Potter party, by all means run down to the shop to grab a bag of peppermint humbugs for the table instead. But if you’d like to make your own, here’s a simple recipe. And don’t be afraid of doing the stripes– it’s not too difficult!

Serves: 1 cup
Ingredients
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ½ cup glucose syrup (corn syrup)
  • ½ cup water
  • ¼ tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp food grade peppermint oil
  • black gel
Instructions
  1. Over medium heat in a saucepan, stir together the sugar, water, glucose syrup and cream of tartar.
  2. Once the sugar has dissolved, place the thermometer in and let cook. Don't stir!
  3. Once the candy reaches 300F, remove from heat, pour in the peppermint oil, and give it a good stir with a wooden spoon.
  4. Take two silicone mats and pour half of the mixture onto one.
  5. In the pot with the rest of the mixture, stir in a dab of black gel.
  6. When well mixed, pour onto the second silicone mat.
  7. Pull on your candy making gloves, and start picking up and pressing the edges of the clear candy into the centre.
  8. Occasionally do the same for the other piece of candy, however, I also keep the silicone mat folded over to keep the heat in.
  9. Once you're able to pick up the clear candy, start twisting, stretching then folding the candy back in. It'll become harder to pull eventually, and the candy should be more white than translucent.
  10. Roll and pull out into a long strip, cut in half and play down onto the silicone mat with a good gap in between.
  11. Turn to the black candy, and quickly do the same if possible ( if any edges have hardened, cut or pull away from those edges and discard).
  12. Pull and stretch the black candy into a long length and cut in half.
  13. Place the pieces with the white, alternating white, black, white, black.
  14. Pres together gently, then start to stretch the candy.
  15. Take clean oiled scissors and cut. If you want the candies to be square, simply cut to size. If you want to roll them, cut the pieces longer, folder the long edge together and roll in your hands to smooth.
  16. Take scissors and cut into two pieces.
  17. Repeat until all the pieces are complete.
  18. If the candy starts to harden, place it in the microwave on low for 5-10 secs to slightly soften.

What a Halloween that was! 🎃 Incredibly gratef What a Halloween that was! 🎃
Incredibly grateful that we were able to celebrate, even though we did things a little differently. 
With a spider theme in mind, my parent's house was covered with a mixture of white weed mat and cheesecloth. The faux spiderweb material we only used on branches, since the darn stuff is sticky and a nightmare to remove! 🕷️🕸️
Kudos to mom who did the majority of the work, adding in faux dead leaves, branches and trees, turning springtime into one magical night of autumn. Dad was in charge of sound effects and lighting.
Typically we hide as characters or creatures in the garden which slows the kids as they come up to the door, giving them time to look around. They can never tell if something is going to move or not!
Being 2020 though, the 'tension' of coming up to the house was broken because the witches were outside. We placed ourselves at a table with an entrance and exit pathway, reminding them to "stay one broomstick apart"! Let's hope next Halloween we're back to 'normal'. We'll have to make up with some extra scares! 🎃  📸 Photos by our Halloween photographer, dad 😉

Of course, we had to have him in a field of cornstalks... a tricky task when you live in Australia and it's actually coming into springtime! Decorating is a celebration of autumn and October- Decorating is a celebration of autumn and October- a small action that makes an ordinary moment meaningful. It's our way of acknowledging, enjoying, being excited, even grateful, for 'right now'.
