1 Ingredient Licorice Wands | Harry Potter

“I’ve packed my own lunch; the trolley, as I remember it, is heavy with licorice wands, and a poor old man’s digestive system isn’t quite up to such things…”

-Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, J.K. Rowling

Make these super quick and easy licorice wands from Harry Potter using just one ingredient. Perfect for the non cook or those throwing a Harry Potter party!

I had originally done a highly detailed recipe for Honeyduke’s Licorice Wands years ago, but the reality is, when it’s time to throw a Harry Potter party, you want quick and easy. Fortunately, I’ve got two options for you. The first easy option can turn out numerous licorice wands that firm up nicely within half an hour. The other option allows you to work with a mold to create the wand design you want, but takes a bit more time.

Serves: 6 wands
Ingredients
  • 2-metre licorice (specifically, we used the one by the brand Fyna)
Instructions
  1. Cut the licorice to the length you want your wands to be.
  2. Take clean kitchen scissors and cut from one corner on a diagonal to the other corner, so you're left with two long triangle like licorice pieces.
  3. Prep a baking tray with a silicone sheet or baking paper and preheat oven to 160C.
  4. Place one cut licorice piece on a plate and microwave on low power for 20 seconds to soften.
  5. Twist the licorice piece until you have a wand shape, and lay on the baking tray, using heavy oven safe pieces to hold each end down (I used stainless steel cutlery).
  6. Repeat until you have a tray full of wands, then place in the oven for 10-12 minutes.
  7. Remove from the oven. If any pieces have come undone, they can quickly be retwisted, but use candy making gloves when handling as it's hot sugar you're now working with.
  8. Set aside and let cool.
Notes
A 2-metre roll of licorice makes 6 wands.

1 Ingredient Licorice Wands, Version 2 | Harry Potter

Author:
Ingredients
  • 2 metre licorice (Fyna brand)
Instructions
  1. Take a mold of the wand you're wanting to use and let set. Big tip, only use a wand size that would fit in your microwave. You can do this as a halfsided wand or a 3D wand.
  2. Cut the licorice strip to the length of the wand and slice from one corner on a diagonal to the other corner.
  3. You'll need one of these strips for each side that you do (1 strip for a 2D and 2 strips for a 3D).
  4. Heat in the microwave for 20 seconds on low power.
  5. Press into the mold.
  6. For 3D molds, press the mold together to form the correct 3D shape. I used brand new metal free hair ties to hold the mold in place.
  7. Place in the microwave for 20-25 seconds.
  8. Take out of the microwave and, using a wooden chopstick, press the licorice down to compress.
  9. Place back in the microwave on low power for another 20-25 seconds, and again remove and press the licorice down.
  10. Place in the freezer to quickly cool down the licorice (~5-10 minutes)
  11. Remove, then slide off the hair ties and remove wand from mold.
  12. Repeat till you have enough licorice wands.
Notes
Do one wand test with your microwave to figure out correct timing. Some microwaves may need longer or shorter.
