“TOFFEE-APPLE TREES FOR PLANTING OUT IN YOUR GARDEN — ALL SIZES.”
-Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl
Could you image being able to go into your backyard and just pick a toffee apple from a tree? That would be heaven! And in Wonka’s world, very real. But until someone comes up with a way to plant and grow them, here’s a recipe for toffee apples, that’s simple and easy to follow.

Wonka’s Toffee Apple Tree
- Yield: 6
Ingredients
Units Scale
- 6 apples
- 1.5 cups white sugar
- 90ml warm water
- 1/8 cup glucose syrup
- 1/2 tsp white vinegar
- red food dye
Instructions
- Boil a large pot of water.
- Take your apples, and press in wooden skewers (make sure they don’t poke through).
- Dip your apples into the boiling water for 20 seconds, then remove and rub with a clean dry tea towel to remove wax.
- In a saucepan, pour in the white sugar, warm water, glucose syrup and white vinegar.
- Stir until dissolved over medium heat.
- Bring to a boil (don’t stir anymore) and continue boiling until the sugar syrup reaches 150C (heard crack stage).
- Remove from heat, and stir in enough red food dye to match the shade of red you want.
- Take your apple, tilt the pot, and dip and twirl the apple using the skewer to completely cover.
- Set aside to cool and harden on a baking rack, with baking paper underneath.
- (To clean up, boiling water removes all sticky sugar that might have gotten onto spoons, pots and counters).
