Thick Creamy {No Stove} Hot Cocoa | The Polar Express

 Make an event of reading The Polar Express this Christmas with a mug of thick creamy hot cocoa. It's made without a stove, so super easy!

Each year, I always think I’m going to be more together come December. Presents purchased, wrapped, under the tree. Desserts baked. Posts done on time.

The reality?

The night before I scrambled to wrap. Cookies were baked on Christmas morning (heck, the Christmas cake still hasn’t been baked!). And I was so zonked last week I couldn’t even think about hitting send on a post. I’m just hoping I’m coherent as I type now…

Fortunately earlier in the month I had mixed together a jar of homemade instant hot chocolate. Just scoop ½ cup (or more if you love it rich like I do) into a mug, add boiling water and stir. It’s recipes like these in the silly season that I love the most.

The Polar Express; Creamy Hot Cocoa
Serves: 2
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup Dutch processed cocoa powder
  • ½ cup powdered milk
  • pinch of salt
  • ⅛ tsp cinnamon
  • ⅛ tsp cayenne pepper
  • tiniest pinch of chili powder
  1. Mix all the ingredients together really well. Place in a sealed container like a mason jar until ready to use.
  2. When ready to use. Divide the mixture between 2 mugs, pour 1 cup boiling water over and stir well.

  1. This looks great – I gave out similar jars to friends for christmas last year, and included little marshmallows in there! I know what you mean with xmas though, it can get hectic!! Well done on making it out alive!!

    1. I missed your comment somehow. Whoops! I love mini marshmallows, and dammit, I forgot to use them! Blame it on the silly season. 🙂
