The Silver Linings Playbook; Crabby Snacks

To make crabby snacks from The Silver Linings Playbook is to take a nostalgic trip back to the 1960s and 70s. Today, crabby snacks continue to be a retro staple on the menu for tailgate parties, football watch parties and Super Bowl celebrations, alongside buffalo wings.

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup plain flour
  • 1 can crab meat, drained
  • English muffins

Cheese sauce
1.5 cups milk
1/2 tsp mustard (prepared not powder)
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup sharp Cheddar cheese, grated
one jar Kraft Old English Cheese Spread

dash of cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp Worcestershire
3/4 tsp Old Bay Spice


If making from scratch

  1. In a small saucepan, over low heat, melt the butter.
  2. Whisk in the flour, salt, mustard, cayenne, and Worcestershire, before adding in the milk.
  3. Cook while continuing to stir until the sauce is thick and smooth.
  4. Add in the crab meat, stir until the meat is mixed in and warmed up.
  5. Separate the English muffins and place on a baking tray, before spooning the crab sauce mixture on top.
  6. Place under the broiler in your oven for ~5-10 minutes until the sauce is bubbly crisp.

If making using Kraft cheese spread

  1. In a small saucepan, over low heat, melt the butter, before stirring in the crab meat for several minutes until warmed.
  2. Sprinkle in the Old Bay Seasoning, then stir in the jar of Old English Cheese Spread.
  3. Scoop the crab cheese mixture onto the English muffins on a baking tray, and place under the broiler until golden and bubbly.
