First you make one.

Then you think it looks lonely, so you make it a friend.

Then you make a third for composition in photos.

Then, before you know it, you have a whole darn family of bears camping out in your kitchen!

Of course, there’s always one booze bear in every family.

To make them is easy and pretty quick.

For the bear shape, I used Wilton’s mini bear cake pan.

Have also on hand, a shallow plastic container to place the mould in, as a bit of liquid will run before hardening.

You’ll need

a box of Jello (your choice of flavour)

8-9 tbsp of gelatine

1.25 to 1.5 cups of water

In a small saucepan, mix the three ingredients together. Turn on the heat on low, and stir until the mixture has lost its ‘grittiness’ (usually just a few minutes). Don’t let it start to bubble or boil, as it’ll turn the mixture from transparent to solid when poured into the mould.

Turn the heat off and let it sit for a minute or two. It won’t start to harden straight away, so it’s best to let some heat off of the mixture.

Get your bear mould ready (FYI: you don’t need to spray the mould, it pops out easily), placed in your plastic container and clear a space in your freezer.

Pour the mixture into the mould, move quick and pop into the freezer.

Check in about 5 minutes, it should be mostly hardened. If not quite there, check every minute until it’s firm. You also won’t want to let it sit in the freezer, as it’ll make the gummy mixture go weird.

Pull out of the freezer and undo from mould.

Note: For the vodka bear (yes, I really did make one!), I split the liquid and used 1 cup water and 1/4 cup vodka.

  1. Jo, I might have to add you to the list of people that help me eat my food! There’s always too much leftover.
Mikala, yup texture was the same, exactly like a gummy bear, but way bigger! I bought the pan from Canadian Tire when I was visiting family a few weeks ago, but I had a look and Amazon sells them (and they ship worldwide. and it ends up being cheaper than buying it here in Perth, even with shipping)

  2. How big is the box of jello. I’m in England so it will be jelly and I’m not sure how many grams I’ll need
